Playing With Purpose
Playing with Purpose is a writing program designed by NYVGCC that brings comprehensive classes and workshops in journalism and game narrative to schools and shelters across New York City. We harness the power of games to reinforce writing fundamentals. Young writers are held to rigorous standards and inspired to produce work that rises above their grade level and exceeds their expectations.
Playing with Purpose connects students with the NYVGCC’s vast network of industry professionals. We provide mentorship and internship opportunities. Young writers and creatives connect with industry legends, like Reggie Fils-Aimé from Nintendo and Phil Spencer from Microsoft. Our paid interns write 95% of the reviews and essays on NYGameCritics.com, experiencing first-hand the expectations of a career in games journalism.
Our unique and rigorous approach creates pathways to careers in games media and game development for students in underserved communities. Through these opportunities, we are committed to building a future rife with diverse and passionate creators and storytellers.

Our most recent classes connected us with students and interns at TAPCo, Dreamyard Prep, BronxWorks Shelter, Mott Hall 3 Middle School, and Andries Hudde Middle School.
Playing with Purpose is accepting applications to bring our program to more schools and community organizations. NYVGCC is a NYC DOE licensed vendor.
